Selecting a complex text and breaking it into its various categories is an excellent way to teach reading comprehension. Having the students work in groups with a couple of above-average students included will almost guarantee success.

Poetry usually serves as complex text for any young reader. I would like to see what that rubric details and how it can be used to analyze poetry.

Having just finished reading The Book Whisperer, choosing complex texts for my students is at the forefront of my thinking. I find it challenging to find just the right balance of allowing and encouraging students to struggle while still making the text accessible. Personally as a reader I become frustrated and usually give up when the text is too complex. My struggle will be to anticipate the challenges of a text for my students and provide the right amount of support. I like the idea of using the checklist to evaluate a text beforehand.

Hi Lisa and Pat, Thanks for letting us know about the missing document/bad link. We uploaded a new pdf to the supporting materials. The text complexity worksheets are at the very end of the document now. Thanks!

I am interested in seeing the Text Complexity Worksheet. It is listed in the PDF resource to the right (Passage Selection Guidelines and Text Complexity Worksheets) but is not actually contained there. It looks like it could be a really powerful tool! Thanks for your help!
