Discussion and Supporting Materials

Thought starters

  1. How does Ms. Laurance involve all students in family reading time, even if their family members are not in the classroom?
  2. How does family reading time help to build community?
  3. Think about how family reading time sets the tone for the rest of the day.?

Adriana Manhasset: A DEAR program is more than a just-sit-there and read experience, It helps the teacher the opportunity to assess her students' progress, and target instruction. At the same time it gives the students an opportunity to read what they want to read, and share what they've read, and receive the support they need for further reflection. DEAR is a great way to get both students and parents reading.

I really like the family style approach. It gives the students the chance to have other adults in the room which adds some variety to what they're used to.They can also then gather in smaller groups rather than always being the whole class.

I love Kimberly's idea to include a new layer of important reading role models into her classroom by inviting the students' families in her D.E.A.R. time! How powerful! This thoughtful work of both Kimberly and all the parents/guardians who participate is a wonderful example to students and the larger community that reading is valued and valuable. Thanks for sharing!
