Discussion and Supporting Materials

Thought starters

  1. How might you use the sample assessment tasks in your own instructional planning?
  2. Why is it important to develop tasks that encourage mathematical discourse?
  3. How might you use this entire process of deconstructing tasks in your own school or district?

Breaking down a math problem and allowing the students to use evidence to show how they arrived at an answer is very important. This is also important because if the teacher understands how each student is arriving at their answer, they can have the students discuss their answers while encouraging each strategy used.

This is a great video about the importance of discussion by the students to grasp and share math knowledge with peers.

Collaboration is useful for thinking through the process for both the teacher and the students.

I've now watched the series three times. There are some really good ideas here about possible professional development at the district and school level. I especially like the idea of analyzing tasks as a vehicle to think deeply about the math standards, mathematical practices.
