Being a teacher can be stressful because there are so many things on our minds. We have the future generation in our hands and we are shaping them and their brains. Therefore it is so important to release stress. I think this is a great way to do that because kicking things and boxing is just a great stress reliever.

What does Sarah mean when she says "taking care of yourself is taking care of your students"? When we do not take care of yourself, we become unbalance and it can cause the classroom to become unbalanced. When a teacher is taking care of themselves and feels good, then the mood in the classroom reflects this. How does Sarah's kickboxing help her find balance? Kickboxing is a stress reliever that allows her to channel energy that may be negative. Releasing stress from work is a great way to keep the mind and body balanced. How/why is this concept important to understand when trying to mentor a new teacher effectively? New teachers are stressed and just trying to keep their head above water. There is so much to learn and do as a teacher, but it is important to let a new teacher know that finding a way to release the energy and find balance in the classroom, but also outside is important. The new teacher can find the balance and may not feel the stress as much.

Teacher: What does she finally understand about herself and about this balance.

Something all of my students don’t know is that I love to kick box at 5 o’clock in the morning.

I actually used to kick box and then I took a break when I had my third child and so I’ve come back to it.

It’s so important for teachers, for everyone, to have an outlet, and it really keeps me centered. It helps me sleep better, it’s a wonderful release, it’s a good way to channel my energy and it’s always fun to be able to tell my students that I can do a roundhouse!

Teacher: So just so that you know at the beginning of class you are going to have some homework tonight.

Coming into this profession there’s just so much that you can’t prepare for and so being able to take care of yourself is really important and taking care of yourself is taking care of your students.

I know that I am not as good in the classroom when I am not taking care of myself.

Teacher: So does human equal balance?

I often times say that I think we teach who we are and I like who I am when I’m a balanced person.

    Teacher: See you later

I like that version of myself as a teacher. So one way that I like to take care of myself is to exercise, it’s to have that space where I get to use that energy in the classroom. And I get to kick and punch things.
