Discussion and Supporting Materials

Thought starters

  1. How does Ms. Vickers help students recognize rhythm patterns to help them understand notation?
  2. See how students use chime bars to identify pitch and the names of the notes How did the use of "call and response" during partner work help students check their work?

I enjoyed watching how she used her white board to write the rhythms up, and then after the students had written the music on the staff, she did the same with the whole class towards the end of the lesson. Breaking the kids up into partners also seemed to really help each student grasp the concept better.

Amazing lesson. Love that the kids get to figure out the notes on by themselves.

I really like how she taught syncopation. That is a hard concept for younger children. However, I don't know anyone who has more than one or two sets of tone bells and she has every child with three notes that are the same. Anyone know how to compensate for that? Even if I used my Orff instruments (which I don't have room to use), I still wouldn't have enough for each pair, much less each child, to have one. It's a good lesson, but I am not sure how to adapt it without losing key elements.

    Summary

A lesson-planning idea for teaching music at Key Stage 2, where pupils learn an African call and response song in order to develop their pitch and notation skills.
Teacher Alice Vickers from Waycroft Primary School in Bristol takes a focused approach to learning music. The simplicity and repetition in the song allows the children to quickly build up a sense of achievement. Using 'tea, coffee, soup', Year 3 work out the rhythm patterns of the song.
As a whole class activity, the children go through the whole song noting down the rhythm patterns. Alice then gives the children chime bars to assist them in working out the pitch of the song. Chime bars are easier to use than glockenspiels because you can pull out only those notes which needed for the activity.
In pairs the children work out the tune on pre-printed rhythm sheets. Finally the children perform the call and response song singing and using the chime bars at the same time.
