Discussion and Supporting Materials

Thought starters

  1. What types of questions does Ms. Wessling ask about the objects?
  2. Why is it important to avoid drawing conclusions about the objects?
  3. How could you use this strategy across all subjects and grade levels?

There will always come a time when students will need an extra push in order to become motivated for a lesson. Getting students motivated for a lesosn is half the fun, and I believe it will increase the overall mood and enjoyment of the overall lesson if students are able to get interested. Curiousity for students is something that helps them learn as they will actively engage with the lesson. A question I would pose is , would there be a universal method that gets the attention of students, regardless of grade level/age?

I feel that not all students will be coming to school on a full stomache, ready to learn, and or prepared. I feel that coming up with things to challenge the children and have them imagine will be a great way to bring them into what you are teaching. Having them work in groups to support one another and share their ideas is very engaging. Then having them share if they would like. Images are always great for them to imagine and think of new things.

I like how SBW acted like she was just as curious as her students about the clues in the box. Kids love that type of animation and enthusiasm in their teachers. SBW reminds me of some of the favorite teachers of my past!

SBW is the BEST! I absolutely <3 watching her videos! And it's amazing how she can seamlessly go from teaching HS English to working with the little ones. She truly is a TEACHER I aspire to be!

Speaker 1: [crosstalk 00:00:07]. All right, friends. I've got to tell you something. I have this box, but there were some things in it, and I wondered if you could maybe help me out. Do you think ... It kind of ... There might be some clues to what we're supposed to learn today. Do you think you could help me out?
    Class: Yeah.
Speaker 1: Okay. So, and there were things ... I think that there's a not ... There were just enough for the number of desks over here. So, I thought I should just take them out.
    Class: Yeah.
Speaker 1: All right. And we'll see what ... I don't know. Can you take a look at those?
    Class: [crosstalk 00:00:53]
Speaker 1: I don't know. What do you think about those?
Class: [crosstalk 00:00:56]. They are [crosstalk 00:01:01]. No. They look like bracelets. [crosstalk 00:01:05]. I think they look like bracelets. [crosstalk 00:01:08]
Speaker 1: Okay. Who has an idea? Yes. What do you think?
Class: [inaudible 00:01:15] was saying that it might be to straight out your teeth?
    Speaker 1: They could be.
    Class: [crosstalk 00:01:20] your teeth.
Speaker 1: Interesting. Should we write that down here maybe to straighten out teeth. Does anybody else have any ideas? Okay. What do you think?
Class: Maybe we're going to learn about how cause and effects, like if you eat these, what is it going to do to the braces?
Speaker 1: It's a really good question. You are asking some really good questions here. We're going to leave these and just kind of remember them, and by the time we are done today, we're going to see if we can add anything to our ideas about why these things showed up on your desks. Okay?
