I loved this math routine presentation because it made students thing and discuss math, especially teen numbers. This technique solidifies the identity and values of teen numbers. The Turn-and-Talk routine was engaging and helped make the students feel successful in sharing. Many of the 1st grade math students that I have worked with in small intervention groups have struggled with teen numbers. To further make them think, the teacher asked them, "How did you know that?" Another quesiton that took the lesson further was, "Does this equation remind you of another equation on the board that equals this teen number.

Great idea.  Thanks for this. I am going to share this with the teachers at my school.  We are always looking for different number talks.

Thank you so much Jenn, Ivan and Annie for your comments! Jenn - Wait time is always so hard for me, it is definitely something I work on every single time I do a Number Routine. It is SO difficult to not jump in and write what you think they are saying instead of exactly what you are saying! Annie - I would love to hear more about what you did in the Kindergarten class!
