Discussion and Supporting Materials

Thought starters

  1. How does music help students focus on the task?
  2. How does music make the line up routine more like a game?
  3. How could you imagine using this strategy in your own classroom?

It's indeed a very creative and effective way to get the children disciplined. The kids did seem to enjoy the game and were also  eager to do what they are asked to do.

After watching this video, I learned that the students really do enjoy when something is made into a game or competition. For example, when they are trying to line up their goal is to be in a straight line by the time the music stops playing. I can see in the video that the students really do enjoy this method when its time to line up.

This was a great way to get the students to line up in an orderly fashion. The lineup process, especially at a younger age can be very difficult. The students enjoy the challenge of getting in line and standing forward before the song is over, which also makes it fun for them. I also liked how the teacher was aware that at some point this song may get old and is excited for the next time she has to choose a song. I will definitely try to use this in the classroom.

Speaker 1: Middle row, line up for lunch.

Lining up has always been a problem. You know, facing forward, not having a conversation.

Oh, here we go first row.

I found the Jeopardy game tune and I told the children, "If you can line up by the time that this is done, you've done you're job."

How are we doing? Our musics playing.

The minute they hear: Dah, Dah, Dah. They are like little robots. They love this game.

Finn, are we ready? Are you a caboose, Finn?

For six months of this year, I've been struggling with lining them up, and literally in one day, I've got them lining up.

    You're almost done.

Looking ahead, once the Jeopardy tune wears out, I'll pick another game tune that they are familiar with and we'll use that one.

Excellent, Jeopardy players, let's go. Have a nice lunch. Good job.
