Even though I had been teaching language arts for 15 years, it wasn't until my graduate special education program that I was introduced to literature circles. I absolutely love conducting literature circles--it gives each student the opportunity to share, to listen, to participate without being intimidated. It is effective for all levels of learners.

I really liked the structure of the class that the teacher had setup amongst his group of students from the beginning in letting them know if there were any changes made throughout the day so it wouldn't surprise them. Secondly, the entire setup of giving each student at a table a role such as summarizer, visualizer, inferencer, word detective is also great because it allows for them to actively participate within the discussion at hand with the reading from the chapter.

I am an ELA teacher in training and I am going to use the word detective among other strategies this instructor uses. The kids are totally involved with the lesson. They are paying attention and asking questions. These are signs that a teacher is doing their job well!

This was an excellent class to observe.
