I completely agree with Ms. Bailey in that one thing students need to be able to do and we are instructed to teach, is to be able to utilize various strategies to find a solution to a problem. In my particular classroom, one thing that students were having trouble with was problem solving in regards to dissecting a word problem and figuring out what the question was asking and which operation they needed to use. This is huge in common core and in PARCC in general as the questions are not just simply "a + b = ?" but rather they have to either find a missing component or work through a series of steps to get the answer. Sometimes the questions may not even tell the students what operation they need to perform but they need to figure it out which is where the understanding "why" and not just coming up with the answer is important as mentioned in the video.

This video about planning math instruction with PARCC Tools is really interesting to watch. We've talked about it at Staff Meetings, and I've taken the example math test online. Teachers really need to think about incorporating into their lessons the problem solving skills and critical thinking skills necessary to be successful on the PARCC assessment. One thing the Common Core standards address is being able to find solutions to problems in various ways. Students will definitely need to use a variety of methods on the PARCC to be able to answer questions. If one strategy isn't quite working, choose another strategy. They may also be asked to prove their answer in more than one way.
