Discussion and Supporting Materials

Thought starters

  1. How does each part of SLANT contribute to student success?
  2. Think about how you could introduce the components of SLANT separately to make the strategy accessible to all students. Ms. Noonan says the SLANT strategy helps students to be college bound. How does it do so?

Great strategy; I think it's very important to use SLANT by encouraging focus while helping students stay on task. SLANT helps to provide structure and get kids into a routine. This is a great idea.

Anchronyms like SLANT work well in the classrooms settings. Posting them allows student reference and reinforcs expectations. It allows for student ownership.

Interviewer: SLANT stands for sit up straight, listen, ask and answer questions, nod and track the speaker. Markers capped in three, vertebrae’s stacked in two. Thanks for your focus.

It’s actually something that came out of the Kip Charter schools, and has been just really effective in our classroom in terms of one, helping students be sitting in a way that’s gonna help them learn. And two, reinforcing some of the life skills that they need outside of our classroom to truly be college bound.
