So I had an incredible life-changing opportunity to serve as the national teacher of the year, to be a representative of great teaching. I thought my job was going to be to encourage other teachers, and I hope that I did that, but I found that everywhere I went, other teachers were encouraging me. The teachers that I had dinner with or met in the hallway or sat down and had coffee with and just told me about their classrooms about the work that they were doing, about the challenges that they faced and the small daily successes that drove them to always be better and always work harder was wonderful.

I learned that I think more than anything else, teachers want to be better. They want to be better for their kids, they want to grow, and they want to give, and so they want to grow their own practice so they can give more and give better to students.

And I think that we all have a responsibility in solving that together, and supporting one-another in that effort, in demanding for opportunity for that to happen, and doing all of that to be accountable, to the students, and to making school and learning dynamic, and awesome, and the best seven hours of a kids day.
