Discussion and Supporting Materials

Thought starters

  1. What role does formative assessment play in Mr. Olive's classroom?
  2. How does the teacher prepare his students for mineral identification?
  3. As students work in small groups, what strategies does the teacher use to help them succeed?

Mr. Olive uses formative assessments throughout his lesson.  He has identified steps but within the steps Mr. Olive has identified certain concepts that must be mastered before the student goes forward.  Most of the formative assessments are done verbally and many without the students realizing they are being assessed. If Mr. Olive has a few students that struggle with a concept he will help them individually but if most of the class is struggling, he immediately changes the lesson.  He wants to catch the mistakes early to provide practice doing the right thing rather than the wrong thing.

This teacher showed us the importance of scaffolding a lesson to kids. This is so important in instruction when delivering new information. I liked the teacher's use of building respect and letting the students know they were in a safe environment, so they were free to make mistakes and take risks. He made the lesson fun and exciting.

I am currently using this scaffolding and getting the kids accustomed to the terminology, and just practicing before the lab itself. Is there any way to get a template of the data chart? If not, I'll just create one. This was great guidance for me. Thank you!

Excellent lesson that can be easily adapted to different grade levels and content. Scaffolding instruction and leading each of your students to use and learn the academic language they need becomes a strong path toward success as learners.
