  • Private message to Stephanie Rios

By exhibiting student's artwork in a museum, it exposes children to a variety of artists and can inspire them to challenge themselves in different ways while building their confidence and showing them that their teachers, family and school are taking their artwork and creativity seriously. It exposes them to art history and culture diversity and brings their lessons in other subjects to life. Authentic performances of understanding help students to acquire and apply knowledge, practice skills, and develop independent and collaborative work habits. Having students build portfolios, help teach a lesson, collaborating with local museums, libraries or venues to run exhibitions or hosting a performance art show- can all help build students up in their art skills and confidence. Cordially inviting family to attend and having them show up, further reinforces the message to the students that what they are doing is important and worth their full attention and efforts.

    AMANDA YATES-GARCIA
00:00:05 Today, the whole school is coming to the Getty Museum to see and celebrate students’ artwork from the projects that they’ve been making.
    LORENZA ARENGO-YARNES
00:00:14 It’s a big culmination event. Families are invited to come and the students are going to get to show them their art and also the other art at the Getty.
    AMANDA YATES-GARCIA
00:00:23 So, it’s a really great opportunity for them to see themselves as artists and respected, contributing members of the community.

00:00:49 This one is mine. It’s a physicist.

00:00:54 It was really fun doing the art with Ms. Amanda. And also with Dr. Yarnes. The most challenging was pretty much making the features - eyes, and a little bit of the mouth.
    AMANDA YATES-GARCIA [sync]
00:01:06 Well, congratulations. It was so fun to work with you. I’m gonna shake your hand.
    AMANDA YATES-GARCIA
00:01:10 I’m Amanda Yates-Garcia and I’m a teaching artist and I’m working with the 5th grade teachers here at the school in collaboration with the Getty Museum.
    LORENZA ARENGO-YARNES
00:01:18 This is a three-year collaboration with the Getty. The project started with just the artists working with the students, but ultimately, they want the general ed teachers to be in charge of the lessons and then the artists would pull back.

00:01:33 My name is Lorenza Arengo-Yarnes and I am a 5th grade elementary school teacher.
    AMANDA YATES-GARCIA [sync]
    00:01:38 Not hard…
    LORENZA ARENGO-YARNES
00:01:39 In the lesson the students were creating a bust of a profession. Part of the project is writing an opinion piece about choosing the profession. I believe in the arts because that connection to the art really enhanced all of their learning.

00:01:56 I put her head at an angle so it looks like she’s-

    She’s thinking.
    LESLIE [sync, subtitled]
She’s thinking about what she’s doing.

00:02:05 Today, at the Getty Museum they’re going to get a talk from many of the participants from the teachers to the principal, some of the students will be discussing their process as artists.
    ELIZABETH ESCAMILLA [sync]
00:02:21 Thank you all for being here this morning. Over the last six months, Museum staff, artists, and teachers have worked together to introduce art into the school day – Art at the Core. And what you’re seeing here…
    ELIZABETH ESCAMILLA
00:02:36 Art at the Core is a collaboration to build arts integrated Common Core aligned lessons that are sustainable and a program model that will build capacity at the school. At the Getty Museum, the education department is committed to providing high quality resources and professional development to teachers across the country.

00:03:01 We have over 200 lessons that we make available on Getty-dot-E-D-U for free.
00:03:05 [TITLE: Search Lesson & Activities on www.Getty.edu]
    ELIZABETH ESCAMILLA
00:03:08 The lessons are Common Core aligned in terms of standards, as well as national and state standards.
    PRINCIPAL RUMBLE [sync]
00:03:17 Through this collaboration with the Getty Center, we are able to come up with a lasting way of integrating the arts, of exploring the new standards, and of developing and fostering students’ creative thinking. This is all because of this partnership.
    LESLIE [sync]
00:03:37 Having art class is very special to me and having it put in the Getty is a little bit like a once in a lifetime opportunity.
    LORENZA ARENGO-YARNES
00:03:47 The Getty Center is this world famous museum, people from all over the world come. There are priceless works of art there. There’s Van Goghs. And so that their art is also going to be there, that’s such a powerful thing for them.
    AMANDA YATES-GARCIA [sync]
00:04:02 So, what does your family think?
    LESLIE [sync]
00:04:04 They were impressed with my artwork.
    AMANDA YATES-GARCIA [sync]
They were? Did- You guys liked it?
    LESLIE’S MOM
    I like this.
    AMANDA YATES-GARCIA
00:04:11 For the parents to also be there and see their kids’ work taken seriously – it’s a really great way to create stronger ties between this institution and the community.
    ELIZABETH ESCAMILLA
00:04:23 Seeing students learn through an arts integration model, it opens up a world of learning and experience that just captivates them.
    LESLIE [sync, subtitled]
00:04:34 Mommy, I really like this painting.
    LESLIE
00:04:38 I like Van Gogh’s Irises. I like it because there’s one flower that is different from all of them. Like me, I’m usually different than all of the people. I am like that flower.
    AMANDA YATES-GARCIA
00:04:51 One of the great things about schools working with museums, kids can go and really be inspired by what they’re seeing. In art there is science, literature, history, and culture. So, it’s just a really great alliance uniting all of those different things in this project-based, immersive way where kids feel a sense of ownership and authority over what they’re doing.
    LESLIE
00:05:15 With artwork, I thought it was just paint and design. But now, I think of it as a part of art is how it makes you feel. Which is really important in life.
