Discussion and Supporting Materials

Thought starters

  1. Notice Ms. Warburton's facial expression and greetings. How does she set the tone for her class?
  2. How does Ms. Warburton frame her expectation of silence positively?
  3. How could teachers refer back to the silent start throughout class?

I'm sorry but the video kept stopping and I could not see the whole story.  I wish I could have seen more!

I wonder if morning is the only time of day for implementing the I heart a silent start.  I'm thinking of trying it after returning from restroom break (first graders!), or for any entry to the classroom.

This works great for me. I stand at my door in the mornings to greet each of my students. Always with a smile to start their day.

Student voices are also a great way to start! Silence is not always the best start to a lesson.

Thank you for this video. I tried this with my classes on our first two days of school Thursday and Friday and have had the best first days ever. I love it.
