Ms Francisco had her students own their learning rather than having the teacher do that all the time .That is a great opportunity to teach them critical thinking.Teaching them strategies of questioning such as making observations,verb starters....helped students develop higher order questions.they should challenge the text to get understanding and move to deeper meaning.Asking questions,providing textual evidence to support analysis and later on exchanging questions among peers make students become naturally analytical they find themselves judging , analysing, hypothesizing without really knowing what that means. A good way to prepare them become lifelong learners

Mrs Francisco tried to overcome the difficulty of the text by breaking down the task using different starategies and tools well embodied in her questions. She did not ask her students about the meaning of "analize" for example: she made them rather move to acting by analysing. The process of analysing was achieved by means of citing textual evidence, posing questions and responding to them.Throughout the process, student found themselves speaking, listening, citisising,giving perspectives and writing using some academic language like hypothesizing ( girl student to her classmate: you asked me basically if) she reported a speach and she used the conditional in context ( giving her opinion) and teaching here has become all in all: whole teaching: brain teaching( posing questions and making strategies explicit) , also heart teaching( communicating and responding to the theme of the text. Students did not complain about text difficuly because the task was broken down into simpler ones: that's why they were engaged and motivated.

Ms. Francisco helps her students develop higher order questions by anchoring a “Discussion” lesson from specific content of a Common Core Standard(s) like “cite textual evidence to support an analysis of the text,” or “pose and respond to specific questions”. She then gives students an opportunity to create their own questioning technique by choosing from several strategies (Frayer Model, Clusters?? Level of Questions, Make observations based on the text, or Verb Starters) used to generate higher order questions that take into account academic language like hypothesizing, judgment, analyzing. Students read aloud and pose a question in an “Open Floor” session to the rest of the class. She reasons that by doing so, the students can question the text, then can get comprehension, deeper meaning and think critically. She also notes that students learn from both discussing and writing questions. In a note card, students write a question and exchange them with another student so that they are to be able to own their learning and she can also see the validity of the students’ questions. Developing higher order questions from a reading is a lifelong skill, and becomes second nature, that students can transfer when they are individually reading and analyzing the text critically. When students go to a higher learning institution they will be more than prepared to take on "A Path to Deeper Learning” with the formulation of “Higher Order Questions from their complex readings.

Ms Francisco guided her students to analyse in a sentence or a section in order to see how it works well to relate with the overall theme. She then encourages them to question the text, that will improve their comprehension and help them become life long learners, critical thinkers and develop deeper meanings in life. She also guides them to cite textual evidences to support analysis of text. It chanllenges them not to shy away from the text because it is difficult. Every child writes out a question and exchange with another child and notice the responses to see the validity of the question. She also asks them to explain the strategies that they used in writing out the questions.
