Discussion and Supporting Materials

Thought starters

  1. Why it it important for students to have a common language?
  2. How does Mr. Durocher use arts integration as an assessment?
  3. What do tableaus lend to this lesson?
  4. How could you use tableaus in your own classroom?

Mr. Durocher, uses the principles of art to have the students u derstand a piece of art. What does color do for the time of day? If colors are black and white, why? This helps the students understand that there is a communication behind the piece other than a pretty picture. The people in the art pieces have something to tell as well. If a farmer is seen on a farm, why is there a non farmer there? A dog? Not only do the colors tell a story, but the people in an art piece have something to say. I can bring tableus into my own classroom by doing something similar; I will have the students discuss a piece and ask them one simple question: why? Why did the artist make this? Why did they do this isntead of that? Then I will have the students discuss their understandings with the rest of the class and give us the overall story they believe the piece is telling us.

While I liked the art work, there is no mention of observation drawing, line, texture, composition etc. I did not hear or see how the hand drawing related to democracy, it certainly wasn't brought up during discussion. Drawing hands from observation is a great art lesson, and the kids did a good job. I think that a science connection seems more appropriate

YIPES!! Way to go! Loved seeing the art come to life. I may try this with my 8th graders. What do others think?
