Discussion and Supporting Materials

Thought starters

  1. Why is it significant that students compete for "no prize whatsoever"?
  2. How does competition eliminate many classroom management issues?
  3. Notice how the energy of the class shifts as they hurry to pass back the cards. Why is this important just before beginning a task?

Oh yea! My kids love a competition. I use a timer to get them to enter the classroom, get their warm-up, and settle in their seats. They compete against other classes for the fastest time. The students have decreased their times from approximately 7 minutes to a record of 29 seconds! It is a great tool!

This is so easy and so much fun for this kids! Great way to speed up the process and make something that is so boring fun and engaging! Little things like this make a huge difference in the classroom.

Interviewer: Good morning you guys. Your warm-up is on the board. I’m gonna hand out your index cards. Every piece of paper I hand out, we always compete. One half of the room verses the other half of the room, who can get their cards passed out the fastest.

I always start at the front. I give both halves equal piles, and they know to take what they need and pass the rest back. They do it silently, then the person in the back holds ‘em up. Whichever side holds their cards up first is the winner for no prize whatsoever, just bragging rights.

Why? Because they’re middle school students and they love to compete. It’s more fun than just getting papers handed out.
