These kids are really smart. Great job Kristin!

I love how quick on their feet these students are and how encouraging the teacher is to the students to just brain dump the first thing that comes to their mind. She will then go back and work through later the answers the students gave later. She is encouraging to the students for every answer that is provided and this is a fun exercise.

Have you heard of the game 24 Challenge? It could be a fun way to incorporate competition in the classroom. It requires multiplication and division, so I'm not sure if it's grade-level appropriate.

How far along in the year are these students? I ask because I am surprised at how advanced some of their answers are. I have a child in grade 1, about half way through the year, and they are not able to deconstruct numbers at this level just yet. I love this routine though! I am a pre-service teacher and am eagerly gathering resources.

Lara, I agree with you. I am also surprised that 1st graders were deconstructing with multiplication and division.
