Discussion and Supporting Materials

Thought starters

  1. How does Ms. Mekita decide to pair the students for the collaborative task?
  2. How does the word and shape card activity encourage mathematical reasoning?
  3. Why does Ms. Mekita give each student personalized guiding questions for the post assessment?

This video is giving me a great hands-on way to transition from my unit on transformational geometry in the plane to coordinate geometry. It can help clear up any misconceptions students might carry over and then gives students a concrete model to assist them in generalizing the relationships in the x/y plane for our future work. I really like your use of pre- and post- assessment. I wish I had time to do that for every lesson. I especially liked that you gave students individualized and structured guidance for how to be more successful the second time around – great work!

Walletta Thornton I enjoyed watching the student interact with each other. Each group was given time to internalize what they were learning. I just wished that I had enough time to allow the math I' m teaching to soak in before going to something new. So many concepts, too little time.

The progression through the lesson was great. It was evident that students had already had much experience with transformations and yet still needed more practice to solidify the concepts. I love the activity! I also loved that you allowed the students to "figure it out". That would not have been my initial instinct. I would have jumped right in and explained everything again. Seeing that students have the capability to work through a little confusion and 'persevere' was very encouraging. I will definitely be using this activity. Even better is following up the activity by helping the students to generalize their transformation information learned. Finally, giving the students the post test afterwards helped them to feel more confident. Great job!
