-
3:
Decompose numbers less than or equal to 10 into pairs in more than one way, e.g., by using objects or drawings, and record each decomposition by a drawing or equation (e.g., 5 = 2 + 3 and 5 = 4 + 1).
Drawings need not show details, but should show the mathematics in the problem. (This applies wherever drawings are mentioned in the Standards.)

I like how the true/false number string goes in progression to help students build on the meaning of equality and symbols being used. Starting with comparing the 5=5 then introducing it in the manner of comparing using an equation 5=2+4 followed by 2+3=1+4 (true and false using 2 equations). Allows alot of opportunities to build up vocabulary with meaning and the ability to explain student thinking in so many ways to justify their thinking. Finally you get the gradual release to revisit the final problem allowing students to wrestle with it in order to come up with a final agreement (again with student justification by using their work to explain their thinking). Lots of opportunities to learn from one another.

I love this true/false routine! I really like the way the kids are challenged to explain their thinking. I can't wait to try this in my classroom to get my students to think about problems in different ways.

Great patience and take the false answer as the true one. It make the children open to any answers and ideas.
I really like it because it's quite different from China's classroom
