Discussion and Supporting Materials

Thought starters

  1. How does the skateboard program increase student confidence and engagement in school?
  2. Notice how Mr. Morrison's vision grew from being about design to becoming community-focused. How does Mr. Morrison strike a balance between structure and creativity in his program?

The skateboard program imcreases student confidemce by combining what they love with design. The students' love skateboarding, parents as well as some people do not like skateboarding or put labels on it such as "troublemaker". Doing something the students' love to do encourages them to keep going to school. Some students were drop outs or some were failing in school. By making skateboards from the ground up lets the students design their own with art and learn design. Mr. Morrison balances both creativity and structure by having the students do hands on activities eith building the board and then designing it the way they want to do; and of course eith any art type of class using concepts and principles of art

I love this video! It emphasizes that skateboarding and graffiti are looked at as such a disgrace and it is not appropriate. This teacher lets them work on something that they are passionate about with makes them more motivated to do this work. The teacher makes sure to give them positive feedback where they were only used to getting shut down for talking about these "bad" hobbies. It's also interesting that this is a place where they can get some credits towards their high school diploma. I think it is a great idea and more schools should give this type of opportunity. The students are so proud of the work that they have created. I also enjoyed how student-centered this is because students do not always learn through lectures.

I think it is awsome. Keeping the students interested and structured. Learning a craft as well.

I agree! Keeping the students engaged will further their learning even more. Most of the students hated school and were bored by it. They are now excited to go to school and complete their projects! These students were working as a team to build these projects. This teacher is amazing!

Hi Sara, Thanks for your question. We acquired this video, along with some others, from Learning Through the Arts in Canada and we don't have the schools contact information. The Learning Through the Arts website is - http://resources.curriculum.org/arts/ - they might be able to help find you contact information. Thanks!
