Meet Sarah Brown Wessling: Tch Laureate Emeritus Transcript

When I first graduated from high school I wanted to go into broadcast journalism, and after about a year in that major I decided I didn’t like the writing very much, that I wanted to write more creatively, and I didn’t think the camera liked me very much, so I changed my major, and I went to the philosophy department, which I absolutely loved, until my dad and I had this really serious conversation one Sunday after about what I was going to do with this philosophy degree.

And so I changed my major a 3rd time to phycology, which I also loved but I wasn’t passionate enough about the math and science to kind of follow through with it for the seven or eight years and so it was really hard because I didn’t want to give anything up I was passionate about everything, and then one day I’m walking through campus at Iowa State and I think there must have been sunlight or something because I had this epiphany that I wouldn’t have to give any of it up if I went to a classroom. That I could take all of these things that I had grown to love into a classroom with me, and all along I had been taking as many English courses as I possibly could just because I was so passionate about it and I literally turned around and walked strait to the college of ed, and said, I’m going to be a teacher.
