Discussion and Supporting Materials

Thought starters

  1. What specific qualities of this task energize students?
  2. How does a little goofiness help establish focus in the classroom?
  3. How could this method be used to end one work period and start the next?

I really enjoy watching this teacher's strategies to get the students engaged and focused. This is another strategy that could work for any age group. I think it is really great that this teacher breaks up the lesson time because there can be lessons that seem very long and the students lose interest. Moving around and interacting with each other is something that the students enjoy and a quick fun break is also something students really enjoy.

Your post is great and give me more ideas. I was on a different register. I am using Google Share to Classroom feature and some of the games listed here: http://www.sharetoclassroom.org (playground). The Sumo game is a good one, they like it and it has some educational values. I also use the Chess app where I play against my whole classroom. Most of the time they win... and they are re-energized!

Wonderful; thank you for sharing. I am a storyteller and teaching artist and I use a similar game, Pass the Face, with my students to teach facial expression and body language. They ask for this game again and again. At the end of every storytelling class I end with a fun, interactive game. It not only energizes them but puts the 'fun' in the fundamentals. I also viewed your One Spot video and will definitely be using this approach; brilliant idea. I have a book being published July 1014 with a number of new, innovative and interactive storytelling games that may be used in the classroom as well, along with written activities. I don't want this to sound like a promo/spam but if you are interested you may view the info at http://www.amazon.com/Story-By-Creating-Storytelling-Exciting/dp/1624910300/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1398792995&sr=8-1&keywords=karen+chace .
