Discussion and Supporting Materials

Thought starters

  1. How does focusing attention on the speaker increase student engagement?
  2. What routines are evident that support student tracking?
  3. How does Ms. Noonan reinforce the desired behavior?

What a great way to get all the students to become involved in what is going on in the classroom.  It is so simple, yet works so well.  It helps everyone to feel important.  They feel that what they say is important.

This is very good way to practice being engaged and feeling like the students are a part of the classroom.  I believe everything takes practice and getting students' attention is one of them.

Tracking is a challenge for students in my class with mild to severe disabilities. Fortunately we track and practice tracking the speaker several times a day. It helps students see, hear, read the body language of the person speaking; and gain greater access to intaking the information and content. Mrs. Noonan re-enforces high level tracking by publicly praising a student who is modeling that behavior.

I do like this tracking to increase students' focus. I do it to an extent but seeing this video has spurred me to invigorate this awareness with the students. I will definitely be on speed with this .

I use a similar strategy with my ESE students They can get a number 1-4 based on whether i have to do a physical assistant to independent response and a hypotheses.
