Collaborative learning prepares kids for the futurework environment by allowing students to learn from each other and solve problems in different ways. The teacher acts as a lead learner instead by asking questions that will provoke answers that will change his mind.

Q:3 It's interesting that the teacher wants to hear the students responses before he tells his view. He is wanting to see if they can change his mind. We can always learn from others, and he is modeling that what the students have to say is important.

It is imperative that we teach our students how to work together to achieve a common goal or create a final product.

Interviewer: Collaborative learning really is preparing these kids for the jobs they’re gonna have in the future. You go out into industry; you see that people aren’t living in a cubicle anymore. If they are, there’s four other people in that cubicle with them. They’re working in collaborative environments, and it gets back to that sense of belonging. I try to use strategies that implant me as not the teacher but the lead learner. My job is to model for the kids what learning looks like. Rather than asking questions to get a desired response, I ask a question that the response may change the way I think.

Interviewee: I call people stupid all the time. They don’t get offended. It’s just a word, like stupid, stupid. Stupid.

Interviewer: Instead of myself interjecting my own personal beliefs, I first let their opposing peers present their opposing view.

Interviewee: It’s not like she’s doing anything else. She’s just leaving mean comments about this girl, one specific girl that she doesn’t like. I don’t think it’s that bad.

Interviewee: The girl that they’re making fun of, she can find out, and she can get really sad, and it can cause a suicide because nobody likes being bullied, plus it’s against the law for bullying.

Interviewer: These kids brought some very important topics to the table, and they discussed them quite frankly and honestly, and I think that’s a result of the kids feel safe in this environment.
