Discussion and Supporting Materials

Thought starters

  1. What do you notice about how Ms. Viaene engages and supports her students
  2. How does she use discussion skills to teach an academic language?
  3. How might you incorporate her approach in your own classroom?

Ms. McGee uses discussion skills to teach academic language by fostering a supportive and interactive learning environment where students engage in meaningful dialogue to deepen their understanding of musical concepts.

A) She makes sure to go to student to student and ask them the same questions. When assigning them a hands on project, she questions their reason for choosing those types of clothes and praises one of her students when they realize their mistakes and makes an effort to fix them.

B) She questions her students their descision on what they would wear for rain type weather. When they speak in just a few words, she will ask them to if they can put their answer in a complete sentence.

C) I will incorporate her methods of asking my students to answer in a complete sentence and will make sure to start the day with a review of what has been taught so far in class.
