In Texas, our newcomer and ESL students are required to take the state standardized test, called STAAR. We build up our students confidence and risk-taking skills just for them to be hard on themselves when this standardized test is forced upon them within a few months to a few weeks of their arrival to the United States. No matter how much we explain to them that doing their best is all we ask, and that we know their personal success better than any state exam will show, it still heartbreaking to see their faces when they receive their scores. Do you have any advice on what else we can do?

Thank you so much for this excellent video! I will definitely use this manipulative to teach my ELLs to write 5 paragraph essays. Do you happen to have a lesson plan and the prompts that you used for this lesson that you could share?
