Discussion and Supporting Materials

Thought starters

  1. How does Ms. Nolan use movement to help students learn?
  2. Why is it helpful to connect music to moods?
  3. How do students reflect on their work?

Mood and elements were addressed in this class. Kids were allowed to express themselves by singing and using instruments. I liked how she used literature to help them learn ! Kids love to sing if you engage them!

I really like how she gives them group time, brings them back for the group performances, and then after class discussion, gives them a chance to reflect as a group on their performance. I will definitely try this approach in my own classroom as I usually don't give them group reflection time after class discussion.

I think this was an interesting approach. I wonder how long her classes are? Also, how long did she prep concepts such as dynamic, style, and tempo before she taught this lesson? At what point in the school year is this? What grade is this? If I had to guess, I would say first, but I wish I knew for certain. Other than that, it seems like a nice idea.

I like the idea "put the beat in your feet" while clapping the rhythm. This is developing coordination and fine motor skills. I like the idea of the connection between mood and music.
