Discussion and Supporting Materials

Thought starters

  1. How does Ms. McPhillips help her students "own" the math practices?
  2. Why is it important to use the language of the Common Core with students?
  3. How does Ms. McPhillips make discussion about the math practices a part of her daily routine?

Love the fact that the students are actually engaging in the math practice standards in order to be successful in the classroom. Great job Audra!

I love your display! I am using these with my firsties so they can connect each year to their new learning. How powerful! We are creating a world of mathematicians. Thanks for sharing.

Love the use of math practices. I also am really intrigued with the math practice cards you had displayed. Where can I find some? I tried to open the supporting materials link on this page and it just opens an empty browser page.

    Owning the Common Core Math Practices Transcript
    Audra McPhillips: I think it's important to use the language of the Common Core with the students. These are their standards, it's what they're expected to know. It needs to become part of their common language.
    Audra McPhillips: Which math practice have we been really focusing on with this work, Breanna?
    Student: Factor 6, which is the precise vocabulary.
    +++ 00:00:28;16 +++
    Audra McPhillips: Which is the preceise vocabulary...
    Audra McPhillips: They're not content standards. They're standards that all students should be engaging in, every year, K through 12. So very often, we'll talk about those math practices, either during the course of the lesson or during a debrief. So, it just becomes part of what I'm doing every day.
    Audra McPhillips: But if you had to pick 2 or 3 math practices that you think you engaged in the most today - or the most helpful to you while you did this work - go ahead and chat with each other and we'll share them.
    Audra McPhillips: I think it's really important with the Common Core standards, since the standards for mathematical practice are tools for the students. These are tools that they need to hone throughout their K - 12 experience. If they can do these 8 things, they are going to be successful with any kinds of problems.
    +++ 00:01:13;02 +++
    Audra McPhillips: I want them to really stop an think about their own thinking. What strategies were you using, which math practices were you engaging in that allowed you to be successful with this lesson today?
    Audra McPhillips: Michael's group, I heard you guys talking about something good. What was it?
    Student: Look for and make use of structure.
    Audra McPhillips: So go ahead and find the yellow one, guys. "Look for and make use of structure."
    Audra McPhillips: In my role as a math couch, my job is to help people understand the standards: parents, teachers, students. So the more I can integrate them into classrooms into what I do, the more I'm modeling that for other teachers to do the same.
