Very insightful. The way the teacher, Mr. Kleine, models reading, thinking and building theories is impressive. This video is a great tool to watch when preparing for a reading workshop.

I started work in the Anchorage School District as an Interpreter for the Deaf in the Deaf Program which was at West/Romig back then. After 12 years, I used my BA degree to go through the MAT program. I also got my Special Ed endorsement and was hired at Mears as an ELA teacher. After one year, I transferred to Dimond High School and I’ve been there ever since. Because I worked with students who were reading far below grade level, I got my reading endorsement. This is my 24th year with ASD.
I watched 2 videos. The first was “When Lesson Plans Fail” because I was curious and I liked seeing the teacher admit what didn’t work and what she did to turn things around.
The 2nd video was Rick’s Reading Workshop (25 minutes). I loved it. I taught a reading program in summer school for 11 summers with elementary kids. It made for a change from high school although by the end of the summer program, I went back to high school feeling thankful for crazy teenagers. I’ve been through many different programs the district has tried, some better than others, and I still feel that silent reading a book-of-choice is one of the best things for students who dislike reading. The most important thing is matching a student up with a book that will grab his or her attention and make them WANT to find out what happens next.

Great reading workshop, really breaks it down to help kids focus on all aspect of reading. Keeps brain activity busy and helps them to come up with theories about the story. Theory may change but it keeps them predicting about whats gonna happen.

Mr. Rick is an awsome. This is a beautiful example of a Reading Workshop. I will incorporate as much i can into my classroom. His questioning for comprehension helps to keep students engaged.
