Discussion and Supporting Materials

Thought starters

  1. How does this strategy affect class culture?
  2. Ms. Todd came up with this strategy after noticing the talkativeness of her class. How could you use a positive strategy to respond to the needs of your class?

I love this! I also believe that it sets kids up for giving credit when they are answering text dependent questions and starting to use citations in upper grades.

I love this idea.  It is especially beneficial at the beginning of the year when getting to know each other.

This is a great strategy. It allows students to have discussions and it allows them to share what there partner said.

I have actually started using a version of this in my classroom with my kinders. It is helping them pay attention to what everyone is saying. It is helping my students that have a hard time focusing for an extended period of time, pay attention better.

    SHARE WHO SAID THAT TRANSCRIPT

    [01:00:00;00]
    TEACHER:
Kind of at the beginning of the year, in September when we are just learning about each other and we are sharing ...

[01:00:06;18] I noticed that this class really likes to talk, they really like to share

    TEACHER IN CLASS:
Now turn and talk to a partner

    EXPLOSION OF STUDENT VOICES

    TEACHER

So I just added the piece in,
can you share who said that idea so we can give them credit for it or so we can tell them great job.

    STUDENT
What I said to my partner Tianna is that ...

    TEACHER
and students are now using their partners names when they share

    [01:00:34;28]
    STUDENT
    I said like ... no .. .Omar said ...

    [01:00:41;24] TEACHER
So it just became a habit in our classroom

    STUDENT
I agree with Savanna because Hofsa said that ...

    TEACHER
I know they love doing it because I taught them how to just give one student credit, just say one student’s name. But if they talk to for example a group of three students ...they give credit to all three students

    [01:01:02;03]
    STUDENT
Me and Phoebe and Elissia and Derek said that...

    TEACHER
So I feel like it gives their little group ownership of what they talked about in their conversation.

    TEACHER IN CLASS:
Now talk to someone first ...

    EXPLOSION OF STUDENT VOICES
    MUSIC
    END
