Discussion and Supporting Materials

Thought starters

  1. How is this lesson used as an assessment tool?
  2. Why does the teacher give each student a "secret fact" and how is it used to keep the class engaged?
  3. How would you use this lesson to promote oral presentation for the reluctant public speaker?

  1. How is this lesson used as an assessment tool?
there are facets of the WW2 efforts in Britain that the teacher wants the students to know.  By having the students incorporate parts of those into the storytelling she can assess if the students are gaining mastery of the content.
  2. Why does the teacher give each student a "secret fact" and how is it used to keep the class engaged?
It makes them dig deeper into the content on their own.
  3. How would you use this lesson to promote oral presentation for the reluctant public speaker?
The students are paired together, perhaps a stronger speaker with a more reluctant one.  The students control how much content has to be spoken by each so that can help a student get comfortable.  Also, they are "pretending" and not themselves which sometimes help the students.

As always, I found just what I was looking for on the Teaching Channel; we are starting a new unit on the early history of Greece and I wanted my students to put historical facts into an activity and using the history box activity will fit the bill. Thank you, Jacque

WOW! Thank you for the wonderful lesson. I am going to modify this and use as a final project for my first grade students to present what they have learned about life in the American Colonies.
