If "but" is connecting predicates, there would be no use for a comma. For example: Mr. Smith taught many comma rules but omitted the rule of the Oxford comma. Also if "but" is connecting phrases, there is no comma. For example: The lesson engaging the students but alarming the Ms. Aubrey was truly a remarkable feat.
