Discussion and Supporting Materials

Thought starters

  1. How can schools help students select internships and mentors?
  2. How can schools provide students with opportunities to engage in deep and sustained practice of the skills they need to learn?
  3. How can schools help students discover real-world standards of quality?

Hi John, in my experience, I think that BPL schools do [high school] internships as deep as anyone - I don't know of any other schools or network of schools that utilize this approach... The good news is that there are more and more BPL schools across the US (and around the world) popping up every day - http://www.bigpicture.org/category/schools/... If anyone knows of other schools/models that engage students in this kind of real-world learning at the secondary level, I'd love to know about them.

I did my teaching internship at a Big Picture School and was very impressed by this model of internships. Andrew, do you know of other schools doing internships at the depth of Big Picture Schools? Maria, is your mentoring role a part of the official curriculum for those 2 students?

Narrator: I want the audience to know how important it is to give these kids a foundation for the rest of their lives in an area that really seems to fascinate them and peaks them to try harder and do more.

Student: My relationship with all my mentors has been awesome. I had another internship before and actually got a job out of it. That’s what I’m hoping to do here.

    Teacher: They’re already set?

    Student: Yeah. They’re ready.

Narrator: I try to stay in communication with the mentors via email, telephone calls. I meet with them once a month. If a mentor is a seasoned mentor, they may have curriculum already developed or things or projects that they want the students to do. If it’s a new mentor, then I will walk them through the ten-week commitment, and if it works out for them, then they agree with the student if they want to continue the internship a little bit longer.

Teacher: Do you wanna kind of stay on the schedule you’re on now?

Student: Yeah. I can even work more.

Narrator: It’s been very positive for the hospital in that we get some feedback, too, from it on how we’re doing things, which kinda makes us change some of our procedures here and there.

Student: They just give me the opportunity to do what I feel that I can do so I can learn.

Student: My mentor, Rick, he didn’t baby me into this. He was just like, okay, here’s the basics. Now look up some videos on the details and just go for it.

Teacher: Go back and change all of those to archive two.

Narrator: It gives me a chance to act the role of a teacher, instead of just a boss. A lot of times, what I’ll do is I’ll increase responsibilities as I see a person accepting those responsibilities and fulfilling the job duties.

Narrator: He’s really kind about me still being someone that’s learning about all this sort of stuff.

Teacher: What are you waiting for?

Narrator: To tell me the truth, it gives me a lot of fresh ideas ‘cause the students, they’re tuned in. We’re trying to make sure that we’re putting out a product that is gonna keep the interest of a student that age. Having their perspective is just tremendous. It is. By the end of that internship, we have almost a peer working relationship. That really does feel good ‘cause I feel like I’ve helped them come out of their shell, maybe, a little it.

Teacher: You should be able to get to everything.

    Student: Okay.

    Teacher: All right?

    Student: All right.

    Teacher: Good deal.

Narrator: You’re able to know that there are other types of people in the world, things work differently. It kind of opens your eyes.

Student: He’s gonna go into surgery first.

Narrator: Real people, real clients, real situations. Everything is really preparing me.

Narrator: I like watching people reach their potentials. I like seeing these kids in the real world.
