This is such an awesome concept! I have used and currently use a similar activity with the folders; called RISE (Research Is Simple and Easy) folders. Instead of the pockets, I use 6 envelopes (3 on each side of the folder) and tailor them to the specifics of the concepts I teach through a novel or writing unit. This really is a great activity! Differentiation is key using this activity, and I love it!

I like this idea. I think I would have a hard time not naming the patterns or pockets for students and not telling them a prescribed amount of notes. My lower level kids might struggle with this.
