Discussion and Supporting Materials

Thought starters

  1. How does the teacher's discussion techniques take all learners into account?
  2. What strategies does the teacher use to help her students understand balanced and unbalanced forces?
  3. Why is a warm-up activity useful for reviewing important vocabulary?

Probably the best language that I can think of for that age level (Gr 8)- I usually teach this at grade 11 or 12- is that a change in motion (either changing speed or changing direction) requires an unbalanced force while the condition of balanced forces will cause the cart to maintain its motion (at rest in this case)

I teach folks who want to become physics teachers and this is a good video to show how to work on scientific language acquisition. I especially like the separate learning goals on language objectives. My only issue with this lesson- is that the teacher needs to be careful when talking about movement and balanced forces. It is possible for the forces to be balanced and the cart still move if the cart is moving with uniform motion. She should be saying the cart speeds up or begins to move therefore we know unbalanced forces.

There is still static friction between two balanced forces. Maybe this is not addressed with middle level students.

Wonderful teaching ideas, especially at the very beginning.

I like the idea of using a warm up to review what went on in class the previous day. Although this is a warm up/review, it's clear the students do not understand the concept of balanced and unbalanced forces. I would recommend having students discuss what they think in small pairs or groups and listening to their reasoning. It's clear they have misconceptions about the topic. This is the perfect time to let them play with other models of balanced and unbalanced forces and come to their own understanding. They won't be able to do this by simply watching the fan car.
